ㄱ) 제초제 내성작물
몬산토의 라운드업레디(제초제내성) 작물은 세계에서 가장 널리 사용되는 유전자조작 작물이다. 라운드업레디 작물에는 콩, 카놀라(유채꽃), 면화, 사탕무, 옥수수 등이 있다. 라운드업레디 식량작물에는 쌀, 밀, 감자 등이 있다. 식량작물을 너머, 몬산토는 유전자조작 라운드업레디(살충제내성) 나무를 개발하기 위해 임업업체와 제휴를 도모하고 있다.
브로목사이닐 내성목화는 몬산토의 자회사인 칼젠에 의해 판매되고 있다. 또 다른 몬산토의 자회사인 데칼브는 제초제 포스피노트리신(글루포시네이트암모늄) 내성옥수수를 시판하고 있다.
ㄴ) 해충내성작물
몬산토는 여러가지 곤충내성 작물을 만들고 있다. 이러한 작물에는 볼가드 목화, 볼가드겸라운드업레디 목화, 인가드 목화, 뉴리프 감자와 일드가드 곤충내성 옥수수 등이 있다. 칼젠은 Bacillus thuringiensis(Bt) 해충저항과 Brooxynil제초제 저항성을 함께 가지고 있는 유전자조작면화를 시판하고 있다. 데칼브도 Bt 곤충내성 옥수수를 시판하고 있다.
몬산토 해충내성 작물에는 뿌리벌레저항성 옥수수, 해충저항성 토마토 보호, 목화다래바구미저항성 목화 등이 있다. 또한 2세대 볼가드 해충저항성 면화는 현재 사용하고 있는 것(Bt. 독성을 사용하지 않는)과는 다른 특성을 갖은 면화가 될 것이다.
ㄷ) 다른 유전자조작 작물
몬산토는 숙성특성변경(익은 후에도 잘무르지 않는) 토마토를 생산하고 있다. 이와 비슷한 제품인 FlavrSavr 토마토가 또한 몬산토의 자회사인 칼젠에 의해 판매되고 있다. 칼젠은 또한 지방산 속성변경 유채꽃을 생산하고 있다. 또다른 몬산토의 자회사인 애스그로는 멀티바이러스 저항성 스쿼시(서양호박)를 시판하고 있다.
몬산토 질병저항성 작물에는 곰팡이와 바이러스성 질병저항성 옥수수, 곰팡이질병 저항성 감자, 곰팡이와 바이러스성 질병저항성 밀, 바이러스성 질병 저항성 토마토 등이 있다.
몬산토는 또한 유채꽃과 콩의 기름함량을 바꾸거나, 고기의 대체제로서의 콩단백질 변경, 변색을 막고 저장 중 흠집이 안생기며 수분 함량을 줄여 요리 시 기름을 덜 흡수하게 하는 감자 등 작물의 영양분 함량을 바꾸는 기술을 개발하고 있다.
ㄹ) 영국에서의 유전자조작 작물의 흔적
현재 영국에서 몬산토 유전자조작 작물인 라운드업레디 유채꽃과 사탕/사료 무우의 포장시험이 진행 중이다.
ㅁ) 소성장호르몬
몬산토는 또한 포실락이라는 이름으로 소성장호르몬(rBGH 또는 BST)을 판매하고 있다. Posilac은 유전자 조작으로 만들어진 성장 호르몬으로 암소들의 우유생산을 늘리기 위해 주사하는 것이다.
ㅂ) 농약
몬산토는 또한 수많은 농약을 시판하고 있다. 이러한 제품 중 가장 널리 알려진 것은 글리포세이트를 기반으로 만든 광범위한 스펙트럼의 제초제인 라운드업이다.
ㅅ) 기능성식품
몬산토는 유익한 산출특성을 갖도록 조작한 소위 기능성식품이라 불리는 유전자조작농작물의 2세대 도입에 핵심적인 역할을 하고 있는 회사 중 하나이다.
Herbicide tolerant crops
Monsanto’s RoundUp Ready (herbicide tolerant) crops are the most widely used GM crops in the world. RoundUp Ready crops include maize, soya, canola (oil seed rape), cotton and sugar beet. Pipeline RoundUp Ready food crops include rice, wheat and potatoes. Beyond food crops, Monsanto has forged alliances with forestry companies to develop GM RoundUp Ready (herbicide-tolerant) trees.
Bromoxynil tolerant cotton has been marketed by Monsanto’s Calgene subsidiary. Another Monsanto subsidiary DeKalb have marketed a Phosphinothricin (glufosinate ammonium) herbicide tolerant maize.
Insect Resistant Crops
Monsanto have engineered a range of insect resistant crops. These crops include Bollgard Cotton, Bollgard with Roundup Ready Cotton, Ingard Cotton, NewLeaf Potatoes and YieldGard Insect Protected Corn. Calgene have marketed a GM cotton with both Bt insect resistance and Bromoxynil herbicide resistance. DeKalb have marketed a Bt insect resistant maize.
Pipeline Monsanto insect resistant crops include rootworm-protected maize, insect-protected tomatoes, and boll weevil-protected cotton. There will also be a second generation of Bollgard insect protected cotton where the mode of action of these cotton plants will be different than that currently used (i.e. not using the Bt. toxin).
Other GM Crops
Monsanto have produced a tomato with altered ripening characteristics . A similar product, the FlavrSavr tomato, has also been marketed by Monsanto’s Calgene subsidiary. Calgene have also produced an oil-seed rape with altered fatty acid properties. A further Monsanto subsidiary, Asgrow, have marketed a multi-virus resistant squash.
Pipeline Monsanto disease resistant crops include maize resistant to fungal and viral diseases, potatoes resistant to fungal diseases, wheat resistant to fungal and viral diseases and virus protected tomatoes
Monsanto are also developing a range of crops with altered nutrient value including altering the oil composition of oilseed rape and soybeans, altering soybean protein for use as meat substitutes, altering potatoes to reduced discolouration from bruising for commercial storage and also for lower moisture content thus absorbing less oil during cooking
UK GM Crop Trails
Monsanto GM crops currently under going field trials in the UK include RoundUp Ready oilseed rape and sugar/fodder beet [6].
Bovine Growth Hormone
Monsanto also market Bovine Growth Hormone (rBGH or BST) called Posilac. Posilac is a genetically engineered growth hormone injected into cows to increase their milk production
Agricultural Chemicals
Monsanto also markets a number of agricultural chemicals. The best known of these products is RoundUp, a glyphosate based broad spectrum herbicide.
Functional Foods
Monsanto is likely to be one of the key players in the introduction of the second generation of GM crops, so called functional foods, engineered to have beneficial output traits. [7]
